Canadian Bison Numbers Increasing

The 2021 Agriculture Census released in May of 2022 reported an increase in both the number of bison farms and ranches in Canada as well as the numberbison on these farms and ranches. The 2021 census reported 149,539 bison on 989farms and ranches. This is a 25.3% increase in bison numbers over the 119,314reported in 2016. This reflects and annual compound growth rate of about 5.2%since the bison census was first taken in 1996 when 42,235 bison were reported on745 farms and ranches.
